March 9th

Thank you, Ms Lajeunesse for working on call for me yesterday and covering my class while I was away.

Academic Notes:

Social Studies Div 2 and 5: You wrote the mid unit test that I announced on Wednesday. Many of you were surprised that we were having the test and hadn't studied. Checking out this blog is the best way to keep up with your studies and your homework. Just saying.

English Div 5 and 6: You were given a workblock to complete your story planning (setting, characters and rough draft). Div 6 was given time to write a letter to their grade 12 self (Grade 7s wrote to their Grade 8 selves). I will give time to Div 5 tomorrow. I will mail these letters to you in 2020 when you graduate.

Today's word: future

This week, March 7th to 11th

Calendar Notes:

Report Cards go home on Friday, March 11th (but we can tell you your marks before then)

March 11th is the last day of school before SPRING BREAK (but don't lose your minds because we are now working on the third term). First day back is March 30th and we will be right back into academic studies.

Academic Notes:

English - You will be doing a writers' workshop for the week, planning, drafting, editing and proofreading your stories. Remember, you are marking these stories and supporting your mark with a good piece of writing and supporting comments. I will either agree or disagree. The rough draft will be collected on Friday. NHI for students who don't (in grade 8).

Social Studies - You will be mapping your manors, creating a coat of arms for your fiefs and taking a test on manorialism and mapping on Wednesday. This is what is on the test: you will be asked to convert meters to kilometers, map a manor and explain why you placed each building/feature where you did, explain why manorialism developed. Hope you are reading this.

French - Francophone countries research.

HCE - A letter to your future self which Mrs Bridal will mail in March of your graduating year 2020. Grade 7s will do another activity.

Friday, March 4th

Academic Notes:

Social Studies Div 5: We reviewed the basic features of a Manor. You were given a 11x17 grid to map your fief's manor. At this point, you should have your title (2pts) and your legend finished (5pts). This is a graded assignment for the third term. We will work on the map specifics on Tuesday next week.

English Div 5: We drafted and rehearsed our medieval skits. This is a graded assignment for the third term. You will be self evaluating to arrive at a final mark.

Homework:

There is a Social Studies test on: Manorialism and Mapping on Wednesday, March 9th

March 3rd

Academic Notes:

Social Studies Div 2: You were given time to work on your scale map of your manor lands. This is due on Monday and is out of 25. You have a test on Wednesday covering manorialism and mapping.

English Div 5: You were given a work block to outline settings, create characters and draft your story (in that order of priority). The draft is due on March 11th. This planning is worth 30 marks.

Exploratories...your last.

Stay tuned for the student of the week.

March 2nd

Academic Notes;

Neighbourhood Meeting: Sooke Fall Fair

Social Studies Div 2: You were given time to map your manor. You need to consult with your fief members to identify where major features and buildings are because your maps need to match. Use the grid system and the scale to properly set out the plan for your self sufficient community. You have a mid unit test next Wednesday; manorialism and mapping skills will be tested.

Social Studies Div 5: We learned about grid systems. You mapped out a manor on a grid and then played a game of catapult (aka Battleship). You have a mid unit test next Wednesday; manorialism and mapping skills will be tested. We reviewed what type of questions will be on the test.

English Div 6: You were given a work block to plan and draft your story.

When movies get it wrong. This is a scene from... for an entry.

March 1st

Academic Notes:

English Div 5 and 6: You had a work block to complete: setting descriptions, character sketches and to begin drafting your fantasy or science fiction story. Both the setting and character assignments are now PAST due. The rough draft of the fantasy/science fiction story is due on Friday next week.

French Div 5 Porter Dialogues were completed. We looked at the francophone world and you were assigned the Francophone Country Project. Refer to the course link for the outline.

Social Studies Div 5: Using a map you calculated distances using a scale of 1:10 centimeters to kilometers. We then did three practice questions using a scale of 1:150000 centimeters to meters. You were asked to convert the distance from meters to kilometers. Next Social Studies class you will be given 3 questions to review the concept.

Today's question is: How many kilometers is a 4cm segment on a map that has a scale of 1:10 centimeters to kilometers.
